This guide covers where to search when you want to find your lost Bitcoin wallet, but before you open a single folder, take a minute to understand what you&#8217;re searching for \u2014 because the piece you find decides which recovery route opens up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-you-re-actually-looking-for\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What you&#8217;re actually looking for<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your Bitcoin isn&#8217;t inside any app or device. The coins live on the blockchain; a wallet only stores the keys that reach them. We use the term <strong>&#8220;unclaimed wallet&#8221;<\/strong> for wallets that still hold Bitcoin but have shown no activity \u2014 no access, no movement \u2014 for over five years. Most owners stay anonymous. The device allows ten password attempts before encrypting itself permanently, and he has two left. In his own words: &#8220;I would just lay in bed and think about it.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"h-quadrigacx-26-000-btc-lost-in-an-exchange-collapse\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">QuadrigaCX \u2014 26,000+ BTC lost in an exchange collapse<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2018, Gerald Cotten, CEO of the Canadian exchange QuadrigaCX, died \u2014 reportedly the only person who knew the passwords to cold wallets holding more than 26,000 Bitcoin, worth over $1.5 billion today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-to-do-immediately-after-losing-your-bitcoin-wallet\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to do immediately after losing your Bitcoin wallet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing has moved yet \u2014 in nearly all of these scenarios, that&#8217;s the honest starting point. The coins exist on the blockchain, unchanged, and the wallet you lost was only the key to them. As long as nobody else holds that key, any one piece you find can reopen the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stop using the device now if you suspect a wallet file was deleted. No service can rebuild it, and a company claiming otherwise is lying to you. If the phrase is gone too, the password itself becomes the target \u2014 and the first step is to write down every candidate, pattern, and habit you remember before you start guessing, because after a few dozen typed attempts you&#8217;ll no longer know which variations you already tried.
