Maybe you forgot the PIN, maybe the device is lost or dead, or maybe the recovery phrase you wrote down years ago doesn&#8217;t seem to work. This guide takes each situation in turn, starting with the easiest fix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-first-figure-out-what-you-still-have\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">First, figure out what you still have<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every KeepKey wallet recovery comes down to two things: the device and the recovery phrase. The recovery phrase is the list of 12, 18, or 24 words your KeepKey showed you during setup. It&#8217;s the master backup \u2014 whoever has those words can rebuild the wallet on any compatible device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Find your situation in this list, then jump to that section:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You have the device, but you forgot the PIN.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The device is lost, stolen, or dead, but you have the full phrase.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You restored the phrase, but the balance shows zero.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your phrase is incomplete or gets rejected.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You have no phrase and no working access at all.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One reassurance before you start. Your coins are not stored on the KeepKey. They sit on the blockchain, exactly where you left them, and the device is only the key that opens them. The problem is access, not ownership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-before-you-do-anything-three-safety-rules\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Before you do anything: three safety rules<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Never type your recovery phrase into a website.<\/strong> No real recovery tool asks for your words through a web page. Sites that do are built to steal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Download software from keepkey.com only.<\/strong> The current official app is KeepKey Vault Desktop, from keepkey.com\/desktop. Search results and ads sometimes lead to fake copies of wallet software; go to the address directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Check your phrase on paper first.<\/strong> Count the words. A KeepKey phrase is always exactly 12, 18, or 24 words \u2014 never 13, never 20. If a word looks misspelled or unreadable, note it now, before you start entering anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-you-forgot-your-pin-but-still-have-the-device\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">You forgot your PIN (but still have the device)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the most common KeepKey problem, and it&#8217;s fixable \u2014 as long as you have your recovery phrase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There&#8217;s no way to read the PIN off the device or reset it through support. The PIN exists only inside the KeepKey. After the third wrong attempt, the device starts making you wait before the next try: 8 seconds, then 16, then 32, doubling every time. A few dozen wrong guesses and the wait stretches into days. So don&#8217;t sit there guessing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The real route is: wipe the device, then restore it from your phrase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Connect the KeepKey and open Vault Desktop.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go to the device settings and choose <strong>Wipe Device<\/strong>. This erases the KeepKey completely, including the forgotten PIN. Your coins are untouched \u2014 remember, they live on the blockchain, not on the device.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The wiped device now behaves like a new one. Choose <strong>Recover Wallet<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the correct phrase length (12, 18, or 24 words) and enter your words. KeepKey uses a cipher for this: the device screen shows a scrambled letter substitution, and you type the substituted letters into the app. It feels odd the first time, but it means your real words never reach the computer, so malware on the computer can&#8217;t capture them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set a new PIN. Write it somewhere you&#8217;ll actually find it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you get the cipher entry wrong, nothing is lost. Unplug the device and start over \u2014 it doesn&#8217;t count failed recovery attempts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only wipe if your phrase is written down and complete. If you&#8217;re not sure the phrase is correct, read the next two sections first, because after a wipe the phrase is all you have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-device-is-lost-stolen-or-dead-but-you-have-the-phrase\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The device is lost, stolen, or dead (but you have the phrase)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your phrase rebuilds the wallet \u2014 the KeepKey hardware itself is replaceable. You have two options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Restore on a new KeepKey.<\/strong> Buy one from keepkey.com (not from marketplace resellers, where tampered devices have turned up), connect it, and follow the same Recover Wallet steps described above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Restore in a software wallet.<\/strong> KeepKey phrases follow BIP39, the standard word system most wallets share. That means a wallet like Electrum (download only from electrum.org) can restore your Bitcoin from the same words. This is faster if you want your funds moved today rather than after a delivery. It&#8217;s less secure than a hardware device, so treat it as a bridge: restore, then sweep the funds to a wallet you plan to keep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If someone stole your device, move quickly. The PIN delays buy you time, but the phrase is your protection, not the PIN. Restore your wallet through either option above and send everything to a fresh wallet with a new phrase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-you-restored-the-phrase-but-the-balance-shows-zero\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">You restored the phrase, but the balance shows zero<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don&#8217;t panic, and don&#8217;t assume the phrase is wrong. A zero balance after a successful restore usually means one of three things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A passphrase is missing.<\/strong> KeepKey supports an optional passphrase \u2014 an extra secret word on top of your normal recovery words, sometimes called the 25th word. It creates a hidden wallet: same phrase, different passphrase, completely different accounts. If you ever enabled this and restored without it, you&#8217;re looking at the empty default wallet, not your real one. Enable the passphrase feature and enter the exact passphrase you used, capital letters and all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The wrong phrase length was selected.<\/strong> An 18-word phrase entered as the first 18 words of a 24-word restore won&#8217;t error out cleanly in every wallet \u2014 it simply opens the wrong wallet. Redo the restore with the correct length.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The wallet is looking in the wrong place.<\/strong> Wallets follow a derivation path \u2014 the route from your words to your accounts, like a house address. Most modern wallets find KeepKey&#8217;s standard paths automatically, but some software wallets need the path set by hand. Before concluding anything, check one of your old receiving addresses on a public explorer like mempool.space. If the coins show there, the funds are fine and only the restore settings are off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We see this weekly: people conclude their crypto is gone when the phrase, the passphrase, or the path just doesn&#8217;t match. In many of these cases access can be rebuilt \u2014 that work is what our <a href=\"https:\/\/cryptorecovers.com\/wallet-recovery\/\">wallet recovery service<\/a> exists for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-your-phrase-is-incomplete-or-gets-rejected\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Your phrase is incomplete or gets rejected<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where it gets harder, but not always hopeless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the wallet rejects your phrase, one word is usually wrong: misread handwriting, or two similar words swapped (&#8220;wagon&#8221; written as &#8220;wage&#8221;). The phrase contains a built-in checksum \u2014 a mathematical self-check \u2014 so a single wrong word makes the whole phrase invalid. The fix is systematic testing, not guessing. Each position has 2,048 possible words, and software can test all of them against the checksum and the blockchain in a short time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If words are missing entirely, the math grows fast. One missing word means 2,048 candidates. Two missing words means about 4 million combinations. Three or four missing words pushes into billions \u2014 still searchable with GPU-based tools that test hundreds of thousands of combinations per second, but no longer a weekend project on a laptop. Up to 4 missing words, recovery is often technically possible. Beyond that, honestly, the odds collapse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For technically confident users, BTCRecover is the open-source tool for this kind of search. Run it on a computer that&#8217;s disconnected from the internet, because the phrase you&#8217;re reconstructing is the key to everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-you-have-no-phrase-and-no-access-at-all\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">You have no phrase and no access at all<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here&#8217;s the honest part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the recovery phrase is completely gone and there&#8217;s no device you can unlock, no file, and no partial backup, the wallet cannot be recovered. Not by us, not by anyone. The phrase never leaves the device by design, so no server and no support desk holds a copy. Any service claiming it can recover a fully lost seed phrase is lying to you \u2014 as is anyone claiming they can reverse or redirect blockchain transactions. We&#8217;d rather tell you that clearly than have you spend time and money on something that can&#8217;t work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One exception worth checking: if the device still works and you know the PIN, you have access even without the phrase. You can&#8217;t make the KeepKey show the words again, but you can open the wallet and send the funds out. Do that now \u2014 move everything to a new wallet whose phrase you back up properly, because a device without a backup is one hardware failure away from the paragraph above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-not-to-do\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What not to do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Don&#8217;t keep guessing the PIN. The delays double each time, and you&#8217;ll lock yourself out for days while achieving nothing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don&#8217;t wipe the device before confirming your phrase is complete and readable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don&#8217;t type your phrase into any website, and don&#8217;t photograph it or store it in cloud notes while troubleshooting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don&#8217;t buy a replacement KeepKey from a third-party marketplace listing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don&#8217;t pay anyone who asks for money upfront to &#8220;recover&#8221; your wallet. Instead, after the third failed attempt, the waiting period doubles each time you enter the wrong PIN\u2014for example, 8 seconds, 16 seconds, 32 seconds, and so on.
