MetaMask Password Recovery When You Lost Your Recovery Phrase
MetaMask password recovery is possible when the extension is still installed in your browser, because MetaMask keeps an encrypted vault of your keys on that computer. If you have your Secret Recovery Phrase, you do not need the password at all. If you do not, the most important rule is simple: do not uninstall MetaMask or clear your browser data.
4 Proven Ways for MetaMask Password Recovery
Use your phrase
Choose Forgot password on the unlock screen and import with your Secret Recovery Phrase. Then set a new password.
Keep testing safely
MetaMask does not wipe after wrong passwords, so you can keep trying your own guesses calmly.
Back up the vault
Copy your browser profile folder to a USB drive. That copy holds the encrypted vault we work from.
Let us search
We test your password clues against the vault offline and never connect it to the internet.
Where the MetaMask Vault Lives
MetaMask stores its encrypted vault inside the browser profile, in the extension settings data for MetaMask. Chrome, Brave, Edge and Firefox each keep it in a slightly different place. Uninstalling the extension or resetting the browser deletes it, and with it any chance of MetaMask password recovery without the phrase.
MetaMask explains its own security model in the MetaMask help center.
What We Need From You
- A copy of the browser profile, or the computer itself
- Which browser and roughly when you set up MetaMask
- Every password idea you have, including old ones
- One public address from the wallet, if you know it
MetaMask support will never DM you. Anyone offering MetaMask password recovery through social media messages is a scammer. See recovery scam signs.
